Lower back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work. For people who sit for long hours, it often builds slowly: stiffness at the end of the day, an ache when standing up, discomfort on long drives.
It is not only about posture
There is no single perfect sitting posture. The bigger problem is staying in any one position for too long. Your spine likes variety. Long, unbroken sitting, low daily activity, poor sleep and stress all make the back more sensitive.
Small changes that make a real difference
- 01
Move every 30 to 45 minutes
Stand up, walk to fill your water bottle, take calls standing. Frequent short breaks matter more than the perfect chair.
- 02
Set up your desk sensibly
Screen at eye level, feet flat on the floor or a footrest, hips slightly higher than knees, elbows close to your body. Then change position often.
- 03
Keep a daily dose of activity
A brisk walk most days, plus simple strengthening for the back, hips and core, makes the spine more resilient.
- 04
Do not fear gentle movement
With most everyday back pain, staying gently active helps you recover faster than bed rest.
This article is general information, not a diagnosis. If your back pain is severe, spreading down a leg, or not improving after a couple of weeks, have it assessed.
